Modern security systems are connected systems. Cameras, recorders, alarm panels and gate controllers all talk over your network and often over the internet. That is what lets you check your property from your phone. It is also what makes them a target.
Why attackers care
An exposed camera or recorder can be used to watch your premises, to switch off recording before a break-in, or as a stepping stone into the computers that hold your business and banking information.
The basics that stop most attacks
- Change default passwords. Factory logins are published online. Every device should have its own strong password.
- Keep firmware updated. Updates fix known weaknesses. A device that has not been updated in years is an open invitation.
- Separate the network. Security devices belong on their own network segment, away from office computers and guest Wi-Fi.
- Use secure remote access. View your cameras through the manufacturer’s secure service or a VPN, never by opening ports on your router.
- Limit who has access. Give each user their own login, and remove it when they leave.
Ask your installer
When you get a quote, ask how the system will be secured, who will hold the passwords, and how updates will be handled. A professional installer will have clear answers to all three.
